BHM Inspiration - Martin S1 E8 "A Woman With A Past"

This is one of my favorite episodes of “Martin” the 90’s sitcom staring comedian, Martin Lawrence and actress Tisha Campbell. In the episode the singer Keith Washington is a guest on Martin’s radio show and during the interview Washington reveals that he and Gina (Martin’s girlfriend played by Tisha Campbell) used to be together fueling Martin’s jealousy and insecurity (a constant go to for show writers). Every episode would follow a plot where Martin’s insecurities or paranoia would disrupt a dinner, watching TV with friends, or any situation where people would expect a normal environment.

In this scene Martin and Gina are at a dinner party where Washington shows up. Someone at the party asks Washington and Gina to sing a song for old times sake like they did when they were a couple. They perform a cover of Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack’s “The Closer I Get to You” for the party. What makes this scene GREAT is that while your enjoying a beautiful rendition of “The Closer I Get To You” and taking in a romantic moment, you are watching Martin Lawrence show why he’s one of the greatest physical comedic actors of his generation. You see him go from acting like he doesn’t care to visibly distraught and freaked out that Gina will be leaving him for Washington once their done singing the song. Martin Lawrence is a comedic genius.
